Floodplain Restoration
Why is it important?
The Victorian Murray Floodplain Restoration Project, or VMFRP, will help bring struggling floodplains back to life.
The floodplains have gradually deteriorated over 100 years due to Murray River regulation. Water is not reaching parts of the floodplains as often as it should, or at all. Climate change is projected to compound these impacts and place further pressure on these important ecosystems.
VMFRP environmental works will help these floodplains to function more like they once did. Improved watering will allow the forests and wetlands to regenerate so native animals can survive and thrive.
Similar infrastructure delivered under The Living Murray project has shown that reconnecting rivers and floodplains improves ecological health, providing evidence that the works will deliver lasting benefits.
Without action, the floodplains may decline beyond the point of recovery.
